Captain’s Corner: A special time for fishing is upon us

By Brent Gaskill, Times Correspondent

Blustery days have ushered us directly into fall fishing patterns. Iím often asked whatís the best time of year to fish the Tampa Bay area. My answer is spring and fall, anytime around Easter and anytime around Thanksgiving. The air temperatures are pleasant and the water temperatures are perfect for just about any species. Pelagic species such as Spanish mackerel, kingfish, and cobia that migrate through our area are here now. Resident species such as trout, redfish, and snook are fired up and feeding aggressively with the cooler water temperatures and abundance of bait. Bottom dwellers such as gag grouper and mangrove snapper are also moving to shallower depths following the baitfish. It all means great fishing opportunities are ahead. Before the latest cold front we had good action from Spanish mackerel along the beaches and several cooperative snook in the mangroves. The calming trend forecast this week should allow everything to come back together and catapult us into some of our finest fishing.
