Mother: System failed my son | Oct. 25, 2017

A tragic story. Two deaths and the diagnosis "schizoaffective disorder, a combination of bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia." A label of a very serious mental condition and the failure of the system to block a gun registration.

Florida law "authorizes," not mandates, a physician to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles of any mental or physical condition that may affect the competency of one to have a driverís license. Just imagine if the governmental agency that regulates gun licenses were to be notified. All hell would break loose.

Psychiatrists screaming that such a provision would have a chilling effect on those seeking treatment. The vagary of any diagnosis in a field just emerging from the dark ages of medicine, on a subject that has not had its Earth Day, and the potential problems that would ensue. Gun advocates screaming of the slippery slope, and personally I agree. Itís slippery, and I worry about my own license to carry (which I will never give up).

The "system" failed. No, our lawmakers failed. No backbone to take on a complicated, serious, volatile issue. Shame on all of you, left, right and now, from what I read regarding a candidate for office, potentially outer space.

Kudos to Josh Solomon, who wrote one of the best nonpartisan articles on the subject I have ever read. When one mother suffers a loss it is a tragedy. When tens of thousands of mothers do, itís just a statistic.
