PALM HARBOR Tampa Bay has 111 new furry residents who arrived this week from hurricane-torn Puerto Rico.

In a chartered cargo plane, the Suncoast Animal League traveled to the U.S. territory on Tuesday to bring back dozens of cats and dogs in desperate need of new homes.

The team of volunteers arrived in San Juan Tuesday with 7,500 pounds of supplies, ready to pack up the worn and weary animals and bring them to Florida.

The Animal League was able to secure a warehouse on Race Track Road to house all the new additions because their regular facility is only 1,700 square feet.

The plane landed in St. Pete-Clearwater Airport late on Tuesday. Kennels packed with dogs, puppies, cats and kittens were carefully transported to the warehouse, where vets could check them out and begin to get them ready for adoption.

Rescue group On the Winds of Angels covered the cost of the cargo planes so the local rescuers could bring back the Puerto Rico animals.

"Thank you to all the generous donors who pitched in to help send food, medicines and vaccines to help the animals of Puerto Rico," the Suncoast Animal Leauge posted to its Facebook page. "Thank you to all our Puerto Rico friends who worked so hard these past two weeks to prepare the animals for transport."
