Ahead of Tampa show, My Favorite Murder explores Florida murders, Seminole Heights killings

By Chelsea Tatham
My Favorite Murder brings its live show to Tampa Theatre on Friday, Nov. 3.

Tampa Theatre will be full of local "murderinos" on Friday night, ready to share their true crime obsessions.

The wildly popular true crime podcast My Favorite Murder has been taking its show on the road the past couple months, with hosts Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff hilariously gushing to the audience about their favorite murder case from each city.

The two will have a hard time choosing a favorite case out of Florida. The state has seen at least a dozen serial killers make the sunshine state their home or hunting ground, including Ted Bundy and Aileen Wuornos.

But in a recent mini episode from Oct. 30, Hardstark and Kilgariff read listener-submitted hometown murders from around Florida. One listener even wrote the hosts about how they're visiting Tampa while the police are in the midst of tracking down a serial killer responsible for three murders in Seminole Heights.

Terror in Tampa: Three slayings in 11 days

The first hometown murder email comes from a person who tracked the impact of invasive Burmese pythons in the Everglades a few years ago. Around the same time this person was doing their master's work near an abandoned missile silo in the swamp (most likely the Nike Missile Site HM-69) they were told two bodies had been found in the area — those of 18-year-old Jesus Trejo and 21-year-old Christian McKenzie.

The McKenzie murder was solved in 2015, but the Trejo murder remains unsolved.

"I really want a tour of that missile silo," Hardstark says. "I'm excited for Florida. There's so much going on."

Another listener submission is from Tampa, where they write "we currently have a serial killer who has shot three different people in the past week."

"I can't wait to see what happens in that case," Kilgariff says. "They're going to get that guy."

You can listen to the full mini episodeon iTunes, Stitcher and myfavoritemurder.com.

Tickets to the live show start at $38.50. More information at tampatheatre.org.
