Florida State safety Derwin James announced Tuesday that he is leaving school early to declare for the NFL draft. The redshirt sophomore from Haines City will not participate in the Independence Bowl.

The 6-foot-3, 211-pound James is one of the most versatile players in the country and a projected first-round pick. The former five-star recruit finishes his FSU career with 180 tackles (12 for a loss), three interceptions, two fumbles forced and recovered, 6 ½ sacks and a blocked kick.

The all-ACC selection lined up all over the field, from safety to slot cornerback to linebacker and edge rusher. He also worked as a returner this season.

James missed most of last season with a knee injury.
