Donations toward USF football facility at $6 million and counting

Based on publicly announced gifts alone, USF has received 15 percent of the estimated $40 million needed to build the sprawling football complex it has planned.

The latest donation — a $1 million gift announced by the school Thursday — was given anonymously by non-alumni whose daughter attended USF, athletic director Mark Harlan said on his latest podcast.

It comes on the heels a massive $15 million donation to the university by USF mega-philanthropists Pam and Les Muma, who marked $5 million of that for the football facility.

"A month into this, we're already at ($6 million) and we've got a lot of momentum and more gifts to come," said Harlan, who announced plans for the USF Football Center in early November.

"This ($1 million) gift, it was really neat because these were relatively new folks to us; they've chosen to remain anonymous for now. Non-alums, but moved to Tampa and the region and just fell in love with the Bulls."

Because Harlan previously has said the center could be constructed in phases, USF conceivably could be another several million from breaking ground, with an indoor-practice facility clearly the top priority.
