Details surface in Hernando deputy-involved shooting

By Megan Reeves

SPRING HILL — The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday named the deputy and the man he shot Tuesday after the agency received reports the man had been walking around a store waving a gun.

Just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office was called by an unknown person who said the man, now identified as 57-year-old Gary Jean Schryver, was walking around a store with a gun, deputies said.

"The caller advised the operator the male was walking on Marble Avenue, then hung up," the Sheriff’s Office said.

Operators called the store, Family Dollar at 12500 Spring Hill Drive, whose clerk said everything was okay and that the call did not originate form the store, deputies said.

A responding deputy, identified as Murray "Jerry" Foradas, encountered Schryver at the intersection of Marble and Antelope Street. Foradas confronted the man, asking him to show his hands.

"After additional commands, the suspect pulled an object out of his pocket and pointed it at Foradas," the Sheriff’s Office said. "Foradas then discharged his firearm, hitting the subject."

Schryver was handcuffed, treated by Hernando County Fire Rescue, then transported to a local trauma center. As of Wednesday afternoon, he was in stable condition, deputies said.

The Sheriff’s Office declined to say whether the object Schryver had was a gun. According to agency spokesperson Denise Moloney, he has not been charged with a crime.

Foradas, 46, who has been with the agency since 1996, was placed on administrative leave. As Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the District 5 State Attorney’s Office determine whether the deputy’s use of force was justified, the Sheriff’s Office will investigate internally to ensure agency policy and law enforcement best practices were followed.
