Say this for Tampa’s ever-expanding Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino: They just scored another one.
Chart-topping hip-hop impresario DJ Khaled will perform in Tampa as part of a just-announced residency with Hard Rock International. No date has been set for the show, a casino spokeswoman said, but Tampa is one of at least three Hard Rock properties that’ll bring him to the stage in 2020.
The Miami-based Khaled, whose countless feature-heavy hits include All I Do Is Win, I’m the One, Wild Thoughts and No Brainer, will kick off his residency during Super Bowl weekend at DAER nightclub at the Hard Rock’s Hollywood, Fla., hotel and casino. He’ll perform there seven more times over the course of the year. He’ll also perform at a Hard Rock DAER in Atlantic City.
Before that, Khaled will appear on Sunday’s Grammy Awards as part of a tribute to the late rapper Nipsey Hussle. Khaled, Hussle and John Legend are nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance for their single Higher.
As for what his residency — and Tampa performance — will entail? That’s harder to say. Khaled’s a master self-promoter who’s unparalleled when it comes to landing A-list features on his songs, but most of the time, he lets those other artists do the musical heavy lifting. And he’s proud of it.
“I’m not just a DJ. I’m not just an artist. I’m not just a producer," he told CBS Sunday Morning in a segment to be broadcast on Sunday. "I’m a genius.”
Whatever happens, it’s another major key booking for the Hard Rock’s new concert venue, which has already hosted Keith Urban and Michael Bolton (tonight) and has shows in the works by Jeff Foxworthy, Mike Tyson and Alicia Keys.
