R.E.M. ready to play SXSW

Look who's emerged from their long slumber: It's R.E.M. and they're set to play Austin's legendary SXSW Festival this year.

Organizers don't have a date set yet, according to the band's website. Still, it's nice to see the old gang back in the news in a meaningful way. Let's see, last we heard from R.E.M. .... umm, we were all still enjoying a Clinton presidency? How ironic is that now that Michael Stipe has all but said he's in love with GOP fire-and-brimestoner Mike Huckabee?

"I can't think of probably a single issue in which I am even remotely in the same universe as that guy ... and yet, he was kind of charming and ... self-deprecating," Stipe recently told Jane Radio host Jane Pratt, according to Reuters.com.

Holy crap. It really is the end of the world as we know it.
