Swan Lake on steroids: Elfman tries ballet
It's been more than a decade since Oingo Boingo put away its eclectic brand of new wave shock music, leaving frontman Danny Elfman alone to work on movie orchestrations.
Judging from the latest update, our man Danny is starting to show the signs of prolonged isolation. How do we know? He's turned to writing music for ballet.
According to Southern California Public Radio, Elfman has composed all the music for "Rabbit and Rogue," a new ballet by Twyla Tharp and a co-production with the Orange County Performing Arts Center. (Click here to listen to the audio interview.)
"The orchestral music that I more or less grew up on was ballet," Elfman tells the station. "Ballet made sense to me. It was the 'Rite of Spring' that changed my life. It was 'Romeo and Juliet' that made me go 'Wow!' "
The production will be staged this weekend in SoCal. Afterward, Elfman's back to work that seems more, well "Elfish" -- three new films, a Broadway musical based on Harry Houdini, and music for a Cirque de Soleil show to be based in Los Angeles.
