Sean Astin is not Goonie enough at 38

Seanastin Forget what you think you know about Sean Astin. Put aside Encino Man, Rudy and the holy trinity of Lord of the Rings. (Please god forget that Speedo-wearing role in Adam Sandler's Click.) Sean Astin is one of us. Sean Astin is stuck in the '80s.

Astin, who turns 38 years old today, was born to be actor. The son of actor Patty Duke, it was rumored that his dad was Desi Arnaz Jr. (Nope, it was a music promoter/newspaper publisher whom Patty would later divorce.) When mom remarried John Astin, Sean got his new last name -- and a half-brother ... actor Mackenzie Astin.

But enough of "This Is Your Life." You want to celebrate his work in the '80s. That's what we do here! And it starts with The Goonies. At one point recently, a sequel was in the works. In an interview with IGN.com a few years ago, Astin confirmed that Steven Spielberg was very close to completion on a script. Would Sean have been up for it?

"Well, I've always told him that he wouldn't have to ask twice, that I'd show up anytime, anywhere for that sequel," Astin told IGN. "I think they want to do like Goonies' kids, like we'd be the older generation and then they'd just have the new generations."

The latest scoop, however, suggests the chances for a movie sequel are pretty much dead, though prospects are heating up that some sort of production might end up on Broadway. But never say never in sequel-crazy Hollywood.
