Spinal Tap tours ... sans cucumbers
Spinal Tap is going on tour this year (huzzah!), but not as Spinal Tap (whaa??). Actors Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer have announced a 30-date "Unwigged and Unplugged" tour that will include music from their 1984 movie This is Spinal Tap, the 1992 album Break Like The Wind as well as the tunes from 2003's folk-mockumentary A Mighty Wind.
The trio plays St. Petersburg's Mahaffey Theater on May 8. (Tickets go on sale March 6.) Check the official tour website for dates near you.
"With this being the 25th anniversary of the film This is Spinal Tap, we thought this would be a fun and at the same time, a little challenging, as we have never performed as ourselves," the actors said during the tour announcement. "Think of the evening as three old friends jamming in your living room. As opposed to OUR living rooms."
No costumes, no wigs and no amplifiers that "go to 11" for this tour, sadly. But I think it's safe to say we have the first can't-miss concert event of 2009 on our hands. And isn't it just refreshing to see a band -- even a fictional one -- get along for so long?
"The three of us make each other laugh and that's why we continue to do this," the band said. "Why work with somebody who is going to bore you to death?"
