'Family Ties' mom Meredith Baxter speaks out about being a lesbian
Wonder what Alex P. Keaton would say about this: Meredith Baxter, who played Michael J. Fox's mom on the '80s sitcom Family Ties, has come out of the closet to People magazine.
"I'm a lesbian mom," she told the magazine.
The 62-year-old has been married and divorced three times, most famously to actor David Birney.
"I was never comfortable with myself," Baxter said. "That doesn't mean I was questioning."
Baxter, who now runs a skincare company, has been in a four-year relationship with building contractor Nancy Locke, People said.
The famous TV mom also appeared on NBC's Today show Wednesday morning, confirming to news to Matt Lauer.
"Some people would say, well, you're living a lie and, you know, the truth is – not at all," she said, according to a USA Today report.
Why reveal this now? It seems the National Enquirer was onto the story, she told NBC. "I did not want some tabloid to take the story and make it up -- I wanted it to be in my own words."
