Actor Corey Haim dead at age 38; "possibly accidental" overdose, police say
Actor Corey Haim died this morning of an apparent drug overdose, the Los Angeles police has told TMZ.com. He was 38.Police told the celebrity news website that they were called to St. Joseph's hospital in Burbank shortly before 4 a.m. California time to investigate. Right now the death is being labeled as "possibly accidental," according to TMZ.
Haim was found unresponsive at Oakwood Apartments around 3:30 a.m.,according to a report in the New York Daily News. His mother was there at the time of his death. (Singer Rick James died at the very same apartment complex in 2004, according to TMZ.)
"As he got out of bed, he felt a little weak and went down to the floor on his knees," Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said. His mother called paramedics, the Associated Press reports. An autopsy will determine cause of death, but there was no evidence of foul play..
Haim was a true star of the '80s, appearing in nearly a dozen movies in the '80s including Murphy's Romance, Silver Bullet, Lucas and Secret Admirer. But Haim will probably always be best known for appearing alongside longtime friend Corey Feldman in 1987's The Lost Boys.
The Canadian-born actor had a long, documented struggle with drugs over years. In 2001, he reportedly had a drug-induced stroke. He was a regular at rehab clinics as well.
"I started on the downers which were a hell of a lot better than the uppers because I was a nervous wreck. But one led to two, two led to four, four led to eight, until at the end it was about 85 a day - the doctors could not believe I was taking that much," he told a reporter during a 2007 interview.
The former teen idol's official website doesn't have the news of his death yet, but instead promotes an upcoming movie appearance in the film American Sunset.
Prescription bottles were found at the actor's apartment, TMZ says. Haim was reportedly battling a flu-like illness over the last several days.
