Tom Hanks signs on to play TV’s Mister Rogers

Oh, it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood – a beautiful day in the '80s neighborhood. That's because Tom Hanks has inked a deal to star as "Mister Rogers" in a new drama about the children's TV legend.

EW reports that the movie – You Are My Friend – will be based on the friendship actor Fred Rogers had with journalist Tom Junod, who wrote a profile of the him in 1998 for Esquire.

Rogers passed away in 2003 at age 74. His show Mister Roger's Neighborhood – the name did change from time to time – ran for 31 seasons and nearly 1,000 episodes. A full-feature documentary about the show – Won't You Be My Neighbor? – is set for release in June.

One of only two actors to win Academy Awards for Best Actors in consecutive years, Hanks has been box office gold for decades since striking it big in the '80s with flicks like Splash, Bachelor Party and Big. In recent years, his career has transformed away from comedy toward historical and biographies, including roles in Apollo 13, Catch Me If You Can, Captain Phillips and The Post.

40 years later, the appeal of ‘Foul Play’ is no mystery

If you think about it, Foul Play might be the most '80s-ish movie made in the 1970s. The comedy-mystery-thriller starred Goldie Hawn, Chevy Chase and Dudley Moore and stood as one of the truly clever homages to the work of Alfred Hitchcock. (Watch th...
