So here's a crazy rumor: Peter Weller, who starred in the original 1987 RoboCop, could reprise his role in an upcoming sequel. That is, if you belief Twitter.
Movieweb.com reports that Neill Blomkamp (District 9) is directing RoboCop Returns, which will pick up the story right where the original movie left off (and ignore all the previous sequels). The script is coming from the screenwriters from the first movie, and Detroit (where the story is set) still works as a dystopian garbage dump – all good signs that Hollywood could avoid a misfire here.
The only question: What actor could possibly play the role of Officer Alex Murphy (aka RoboCop)? Peter Weller, who was RoboCop in the first two movies, is now 71 years old.
But when a fan tweeted "Can't wait to see the @NeillBlomkamp twist … who should play Robocop though?" – @NeillBlomkamp responded: "Peter Weller."
Wishful thinking or a masterful plan? Weller, Movieweb points out, is still an active actor. And perhaps Blomkamp is merely honoring his performance rather than tipping his cap. I'd say "we'll find out soon enough," but RoboCop Returns doesn't have a release date yet.
