Alec Baldwin to play Batman’s dad in ‘Joker’ flick

Here's a casting announcement that sounds intriguing: Alec Baldwin is slated to play Thomas Wayne – aka the father to Bruce "Batman" Wayne – in the upcoming flick Joker.

The Todd Phillips movie, which Deadline.com says will "possess a grittier, '80s sensibility," is set to begin filming on Sept. 10. Other castmembers include Joaquin Phoenix in the title role along with Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron and Zazie Beetz. (Really? Marc Maron?!? He's my hero. Count me in on this ride.)

How much screen time Baldwin will get is anyone's guess. In previous installments of the Batman franchise, Thomas Wayne usually makes an early exit after being murdered outside a Gotham theater. But given Baldwin's busy schedule these days – he's up for another Emmy after playing Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live – even a few minutes of screen time will be coveted.

Joker is scheduled to premiere on Oct. 4, 2019.
