'80s movie quote of the day: Secret of My Success
Michael J. Fox turns 56 today, and it's hard to imagine the '80s without him. For the '80s movie quote of the day, it'd be too obvious to pick a line or two from the Back to the Future trilogy. So how about the underrated 1987 flick Secret of My Success?
Brantley Foster: "Aunt Vera, listen, since the last time we met there's been a change."
Vera Prescott: "Yes... nice suit, Brantley!"
Brantley Foster: "Agh! Ow! Look, what I mean to say is... Oh, Christ! I'm not free any more!"
Vera Prescott: "What, you're going to charge me? Oh ho, you're getting awfully cynical - does your mother know about this?"
Brantley Foster: "Ohh, no, I am not available."
Vera Prescott: "Oh, good, you're not going to charge me."
Vera Prescott was played by Margaret Whitton, who died in December 2016. (Her on-screen husband was played by Richard Jordan, who died in 1993.)
Secret of My Success was nominated for one Golden Globe award. For what, you ask? Though Whitton certainly was deserving of a statue for supporting actress, the nomination was for best song by Night Ranger for Secret of My Success, a tune they still play regularly in concert. Who did they lose out to? The power ballad Time of My Life from Dirty Dancing.
Is there a message in all of this? Carpe diem, Michael J. Fox. Carpe diem.
