Anyone remember the first great U.S. ska band? Here are the Untouchables
The Ska revivial lasted the entire decade of the ‘80s, starting with UK bands like Madness and continued into the late ‘80s with forgotten bands like The Untouchables and songs like Free Yourself.
Unlike the smash 1987 movie The Untouchables that took place in the mean streets of Chicago, the band The Untouchables originated in L.A. and are credited by some as the first relevant American Ska band and have been playing since 1981. In 1985, The Untouchables released their best known song Free Yourself and while the single did no chart in America, it did reach No. 26 in the UK.
The band is active and stills plays in their hometown, although their lineup has changed more times than Steve Spears has quoted Jimmy Malone with "They pull a knife. You pull a gun."
