Apollo and Rocky … together again? It could happen, Stallone says
We were at Stuck in the ‘80s don’t normally celebrate news on sequels, but for this, we’re making an exception. Sylvester Stallone says in a new Variety interview that he’s keen on making a sequel to 2015’s Creed that could include the return of Apollo Creed.
The story could be set before 1985’s Rocky IV, where Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) died at the hands of Russian boxer Ivan Drago. Ryan Coogler, who directed Creed, has a way of spinning it around.
“Ryan has some ideas of going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together,” Stallone said. “Think of The Godfather 2. That’s what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious.”
Could Weathers return as Apollo? That seems unlikely (unless a lot of CGI were used), though Stallone said he recently bumped into the 67-year-old Weathers and said he looked as strong as ever.
“I can’t believe I got in the ring with him,” Stallone told Variety. “Even if it was play fighting.”
