Canada week ends today so 'Get It While You Can'
Yesterday on the blog, we covered one-name artists, but let's not forget about the less popular "first name, last initial" artists. A few come to mind like Sheila E, Stacey Q, Mike D of the Beastie Boys and Kenny G (groan) and .... well, Canada had Gary O'.
While Gary O'Connor doesn't sound that bad of a stage name, O'Connor switched to Gary O' in the early '80s and the change landed him a few hits on the Canadian charts. Gary O' hit the U.S. Top 100 in 1981 with a Hollies remake of Pay You Back With Interest and in 1984 he scored again (but only in Canada) with the rocker Get It While You Can.
The video for Get It While You Can finds Gary O. using Spearsy's Time Machine to go back to his school-aged self with advice to ditch the marionette puppets, play rock n roll guitar and learn how to hustle at pool. There is also a side black/white story about a damsel and a private eye that makes no sense, but when you're Gary O', you get to make the video you want.
His 1984 album Strange Behaviour would be his last as his focus turned towards songwriting. O'Connor wrote Top 40 hits for other artists including two for 38 Special with One Time For Old Times and Back Where You Belong.
