Concert review: Cyndi Lauper at Downtown Disney's House of Blues

In the 30 years since her debut album She's So Unusual changed the '80s popscape, the entire music industry has turned inside out. But Cyndi Lauper appears to remain entirely unchanged -- pixie-bodied, sharp-tongued and a total treasure to see perform live.

Now an unthinkable 60 years old, Cyndi's She So Unusual anniversary tour hit Orlando's Downtown Disney on Sunday night for a stop at the House of Blues, an entirely too small venue for a talent her size. The crowd was mashed together for three hours, all to catch their '80s idol roll through the album from track one to 10, including the notable hits Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Time After Time, Money Changes Everything and She Bop.

There were plenty of weird moments. The night began with the House of Blues staff practically apologetically asking people to put away cell phones "at the artist's request." "They'll stop the show if they see phones," the staffer pled. And Cyndi's entrance was bizarre in itself. As a keyboard player was struggling to hook up her audio monitor, Cyndi just strolled onto stage behind the drum set. Dressed like a cast member of Dune with a futuristic leather outfit and long red hair, she looked closer to 30 years old than 60. A few unrehearsed introductory remarks later, the band launched into Money Changes Everything, an amazingly strong demo of her hardly-diminished vocal talent.

She also dropped more F-bombs that the movie Scarface during some meandering banter between songs, which cut her into set time forcing her to cut one of her encore numbers. But enough of the complaining.

For the most part, Cyndi gave her fans exactly what they wanted and needed: a reason to dance (alas, there was no ROOM to dance at HOB) and a evening to reminisce. And she even threw in Goonies Are Good Enuf to boot.

Only a handful of dates remain on this tour. Look for your city on the tour list.
