Animal House: The Musical?!? ("I anticipate a deeply religious experience")

How’s this for an odd timing of news. Today, the 30th anniversary of the death of John Belushi, Universal Pictures Stage Productions announced it's developing a stage musical based on his classic college comedy National Lampoon’s Animal House. We’re not sure if that’s good enough cause for a toga party or not.

Animal House: The Musical will feature an original score by ... sadly not Otis Day and the Knights. Rather it's by Barenaked Ladies, whom we thought broke up years ago. (Okay, so we're either wrong or this is their big comeback.) The musical will be directed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw, who also directed The Book of Mormon (so we're in good hands there.)

In addition to Belushi, who died March 5, 1982, from a drug overdose in Hollywood, the 1978 film’s cast included Tom Hulce, Bruce McGill, Tim Matheson, Stephen Furst and Karen Allen. Hulce had a huge career on stage after Animal House, so I wouldn't be shocked to see him pop up in the production as the "big" name to help promote it.
