"This is Australia" ... Last chance to help us pick tunes for "Oz in the '80s"
Of all the music suggestions for our upcoming "Australia in the '80s" podcast, this tune is the one that stays stuck in the head the most. It's called Sounds of Then (This is Australia) and it's by a band awkwardly named GANGgajang.
The band, which formed in 1984, is still around today, with original members -- former Riptides singer Mark "Cal" Callaghan, bassist Chris Bailey and drummer Graham "Buzz" Bidstrup (both from the Angels) -- forming the core of the lineup. But chances are, unless you live in Australia (or Brazil, where GANGgajang is very popular), you've never heard of them. And that's the point behind this podcast. We want to uncover and honor the bands and music that ruled Australia during that magical decade -- but didn't make it far beyond the borders.
That means no INXS, no Men at Work, no Midnight Oil. Trust me, that leaves plenty of options. I've been working on this show for a while now, and it's time to make our decisions on which tunes to include. So if you have any last-minute suggestions, fire away!
