Band most overdue for comeback? Electric Light Orchestra
Hard to believe, but the Electric Light Orchestra had just one No. 1 over their career. It was 1980's Xanadu, featuring Olivia Newton-John. (Technically, they had a second No. 1 hit -- Turn to Stone -- in Canada back in 1977.)
The band, led by Jeff Lynne, has reformed here and there over the years, but their big run was 1970 to 1983. I've always thought that it was the arrival of MTV that did the band in -- making them one of many '70s bands that couldn't make the conversion to music videos -- but in reality it was the same old reasons: fights with the record company, disgruntled band members moving on, and a big shift in the sounds of popular music.
These days, with our taste in classic, eclectic music returning, Lynne is overdo to make another run at it. That's my birthday wish for Jeff, who turns 63 years old today. Start with a reissue of the band's classic albums, and ELO will rediscover the love that we came to know. (Yikes, a Xanadu pun. Forgive me.)
