Bern's Wine Fest: She-Bopping with Rubix Cubed
Festival season is here in Tampa Bay. These weekend, we have two choices: Tampa Bay Blues Fest in St. Petersburg, featuring a bunch of bands I maybe heard of once. Or Bern's Wine Fest in Tampa, featuring Rubix Cubed, the official '80s cover band of Stuck in the '80s.
Last night, my girlfriend Tina (no nickname, remember?) chose Wine Fest. And we chose wisely.
Despite being crammed onto a stage a third the size that the band needed for their full show, Rubix Cubed made the most of the '80s-themed evening, playing two sets of '80s classics, sprinkled with video highlights from movies, TV shows and nostalgic commercials.
Once the crowd had absorbed enough free drinks and food, they invaded the dance floor to thrash along (and drop a few wine glasses) to Blister in the Sun, I Ran, She-Bop, Whip It, and Midnight Oil's Beds Are Burning (which has never been one of my favorites, but Rubix's version is better than the original).
I'm pretty sure the night ended with a least a dozen of the dance-floor inhabitants passing out on their bathroom floors. And that, truly, is the best sign of another perfect '80s night.
