Beverly Hills Cop sequel on the way ... as TV drama

beverly-hills-cop.jpg"Is this the gentleman who ruined the buffet at the Harrow club this morning?" Yes, Axel Foley is returning to Beverly Hills, but this time the latest Eddie Murphy tale won't be a big-screen movie; Beverly Hills Cop will return as a TV series.

Variety reports that "the new-model Beverly Hills Cop revolves around Aaron Foley, a blue-collar cop in the land of the rich and famous who struggles to get out of his larger-than-life father's shadow." Talk about throwing a banana in the tailpipe.

I'm not sure what's more unbelievable: That Murphy, who could really use a movie hit, is lending his storyline out to TV. Or that smartass Axel Foley would name his kid Aaron.

And get this: From what I can tell, this project isn't a comedy; it's a drama. Variety says Murphy was against the hire of a comedy redux and has instead insisted on hiring Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield

But will this all actually happen or is it more Hollywood tabloid fodder? According to Variety, it better happen. CBS has inked a pilot production order and there's a "hefty penalty" if it's not picked up as a full series.

"Before I go, I just want you two to know something, alright? The sequel story... was working. Okay? It was working, and you guys just messed it up. Okay? I'm trying to figure you guys out, but I haven't yet. But it's cool."
