On this day in the '80s: Tokyo Disneyland opens

Walt Disney doesn't get a lot of love at Stuck in the '80s, even though its sister park Epcot turns 30 years old this year and everyone's favorite arcade movie Tron was born this decade. But today, at the very least, we get to honor another big Disney anniversary: Tokyo Disneyland opened April 15, 1983.

According to my crack research staff, Tokyo Disneyland ranks third in theme park attendance behind only the Magic Kingdom in Orlando and the original Disneyland in California. And it mirrors the basic concept. There are seven themed mini-parks in the Japanese version: the World Bazaar, Adventureland, Westernland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Critter Country and Mickey's Toontown.

Tokyo Disneyland is not actually owned by Disney; the "theme" is rented by an entity called The Oriental Land Co., making it and its sister park DisneySea, the only parks not owned by the mother ship.
