Disney's Big Thunder Mountain coming to ABC as TV series
Turning Disney theme park rides into movies has been a mixed bag. For every Pirates of the Caribbean treasure chest, there are the disappointments of The Haunted Mantion, Mission to Mars and The Country Bears. But Disney-owned ABC is going to make a go of it anyway with another ride from the 1980s: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
The indoor/outdoor rollercoaster opened in California in 1979 and in Florida in 1980. The Hollywood Reporter says ABC's planned TV series will center on a mining town during the Gold Rush in an area that is considered sacred to Native Americans. Okay, I can see that; Disney never shies away from a chance to shine positive light on the history of Native Americans. But is this a comedy? Drama? Family friendly? Details are pretty scarce, though THR says Jason Fuchs (Ice Age: Continental Drift) will write the series with Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious) on board to supervise and executive produce.
Personally, I'd rather tune into Space Mountain series, but I guess Battlestar Galactica has the momentum on that.
