Duran Duran's 'Rio' sailboat is ship-shape again
One day after we find out the Love Boat is headed to the scrap heap, we get much happier news. It turns out that the 70-foot ketch -- named the Eilean -- that famously held the Duran Duran boys for the Rio video has been refurbished and is ship-shape and ready to sail again.
Granted, it was no small feat. The yacht fell into disrepair almost immediately after the 1983 video was filmed. "Soon after filming ended she collided with a ferry breaking her mizzen mast and whilst waiting for repair she sank in her mooring," according to Medberths.com. "She was pulled into a creek, tied to a mangrove tree where termites began eating her spars."
Thankfully though, someone put the elbow grease (and money) into its repairs. "This was no easy measure – the rigging and top rails were gone, the spars, masts, booms and bowsprit were beyond repair and all the deck gear was unusable," the website says. "The entire interior had been devasted by worms and had to be destroyed – all except for a small part of the original saloon table.
