Earth girls are easy ... comedy is hard

Jim Carrey, who turns 44 today, was just a rookie actor back in the 80s. (Hey, even "In Living Color" didn't get going until 1990.) But since it's his birthday, we'll honor his accomplishments in our most cherished decade.

So that leaves us with .... the campy sci-fi flick "Earth Girls are Easy" and vampire comedy/el bombo "Once Bitten." Yikes. His breakthrough on the big screen wouldn't come until 1994 with the release of Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb & Dumber.

But back to our fave Carrey 80s classic -- Earth Girls. Carrey joins Jeff Goldblum, Geena Davis, Damon Wayans, Julie Brown and Michael McKean in a movie about furry aliens who accidentally crash their spacecraft in a pool in L.A. (That's Jimbo, second from the right in the photo.)

Great quotes too ... not from Carrey because, of course, he's an non-English speaking alien, remember?:
-- "Have a mental margarita."
-- "Just because they're aliens doesn't mean they can't be dates."
-- "No, this is the Valley. Finland is the capital of Norway."
