Eddie Murphy exits as Oscar host ... how's that for a banana in the tailpipe!

beverly-hills-cop-41.jpgIf you were looking forward to seeing Eddie Murphy host the Oscars in 2012, we have some bad news: Mr. Axl Foley on Wednesday stepped down from the job helming the 84th Academy Awards telecast, the Hollywood Reporter said. The news comes one day after the show's producer, Brett Ratner, exited. Ratner was under fire for making a homophobic slur in an interview at an opening-night screening of his movie Tower Heist. (I was going to check out the movie, since he has Murphy AND Matthew Broderick, but I hear it's pretty bogus.)

"I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well," Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak said Wednesday in a statement.

Murphy kept his cool in a statement as well: "First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party's decision with regard to a change of producers for this year's Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I'm sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job."
