First at new Wembley: George Michael
George Michael will be the first artist to perform in the newly rebuilt Wembley Stadium outside London on June 9.
The original Wembley Stadium was demolished in 2002 and was supposed to have been rebuilt by 2006, but various construction delays have hampered its completion. Other acts, including the Rolling Stones and Bon Jovi, could have been the first performers had the stadium met its original deadline.
Instead it will be George Michael, who will be in the middle of a European tour at that time. It's a fitting match since several of Michael's most memorable performances have come at that venue, including:
- 1985's Live Aid
- Wham!'s farewell show in 1986
- The Freddie Mercury Concert for Life in 1992.
Speaking of Wham!, rumor has it that Michael has invited former partner Andy Ridgeley to perform with him for first Wembley show and that Ridgeley has agreed. Should be a hell of a show.
