Got $29.93 to burn? 'Webster' coming to DVD

Webster on DVDWebster is coming to DVD. Just season 1, so don't get too excited. The 3-disc set will have 22 episodes and some still undisclosed bonus features. according to the aptly named TVshowsondvd.com website. Total cost: $29.93. Look for a January 2011 release.

Now, for a little perspective. Lord knows I'll buy just about anything on DVD. I have a Lair full of dust-covered plastic cases to prove my point. Heck, I'd buy a DVD of the Complete Spearsy Divorce Proceedings, Seasons 1 and 2. (Though it's not as fun to watch since I know how it all ends, but the bonus materials are still a hoot.) But Webster

The show, which starred former NFL great Alex Karras, Susan Clark and the creepily adorable Emmanuel Lewis, ran from 1983 to 1987. So that's right the wheelhouse of the heart of the '80s. But I swear I couldn't have watched more than a single episode along the way. It just felt like Diff'rent Strokes, fine-tuned. Granted, I was probably a little too old to appreciate the sage-like wisdom of young Mr. Lewis, but please don't be mad if I say this is one '80s release I'll pass on.

TOP 5 PIECES OF WEBSTER TRIVIA:

1. Catchy as it is, "Webster" wasn't the original title for the show. It was first called "Another Ballgame" and then "Then Came You" before it was renamed. The renaming to "Webster" caused a major riff in the cast, because it called for the show to be refocused on Lewis.

2. Lewis's character Webster was ages 5 to 8 throughout the show's run, but Lewis himself actually played Webster from ages 12 to 16.

3. Webster always referred Katherine Calder-Young Papadapolis as "Ma'am" because she wasn't his Mom, but that was the closest sounding to "Mom."

4. Lewis was trampled by a horse during filming of one episode on a ranch in California.

5. Lewis's mother became aggravated with crew members who continually picked him up to carry him to filming. Eventually the head of Paramount Television had to tell the cast to stop.
