A growing pain: Kirk Cameron jumps into Todd Akin controversy

kirk-cameron-mike-seaver-growing-pains-teenager.jpgKirk Cameron has officially sounded off in support of embattled Missouri Rep. Todd Akin, who drew a firestorm by saying during an interview, "if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try and shut that whole thing down."

The former Growing Pains star from the '80s might be the friend nobody really wants -- even Akin -- after Cameron drew plenty of fire himself back in March when he said on CNN that homosexuality was "unnatural." So what did he have to say about Akin?

"I watched through the whole thing last night and he (Akin) clearly is a pro-life advocate and for that I respect him," Cameron told CNN (again) on Tuesday. (Credit those CNN booking agents with knowing how to book someone who can make headlines.)  "He said that he misspoke and that he mis-phrased something and he apologized and I'm the kind of person that believes that, I would like to be evaluated by my entire career and my entire life, not two words that I would misspeak and then later apologize for, so he's in a tough spot."

So Kirk is not exactly supporting Akin's "legitimate rape" argument, just his right to make it -- and not be judged entirely by it. Okay. Whew. Maybe his TV dad won't spank him so hard this time around.
