Help us name the best R&B songs of the '80s
Something about this holiday week has me listening to R&B every day. For some of you, that's probably no big adjustment. But I'm used to singing along to Pet Shop Boys or Oingo Boingo in my car or at my desk -- not Atlantic Starr or Sergio Mendes.
So I've decided what I really need is the ultimate '80s R&B playlist. List time again! Help us name the BEST R&B tunes from our decade, and we'll hopefully feature some on the podcast as well. The only qualification? It must have been released during the '80s and be considered part of that hard-to-pin down genre of R&B and/or soul. Just drop your suggestions in the comments field.
Here are three songs I've listened to since waking up this morning:
DANCING IN THE SHEETS (Shalamar): Putting it on the Footloose soundtrack makes this easier to love. But can you remember what scene it appears in? [Video]
RHYTHYM OF THE NIGHT (DeBarge): This 1985 song, written by Diane Warren, was the biggest hit by the Motown family group. [Video]
SHAKE YOU DOWN (Gregory Abbott): This 1986 hit was one of 30 demo tunes that Abbott wrote and recorded before he finally got a record deal with CBS. [Video]
