Here comes 'Space Invaders ... The Movie' (Admission will sadly be more than 25 cents)

space_invaders.pngThe Super Mario Bros. movie in 1993 was ... well, "intolerable" seems like the safest word. But give it up to Hollywood for giving video games another chance to star on the big screen. Fans of the '80s, I give you:

Space Invaders ... The Movie.

The Hollywood Reporter says producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Odd Lot Entertainment’s Gigi Pritzker have teamed up to option the rights and develop the project. Now all they need is a writer -- I'm available! -- and then a couple million movie tickets sold.

"With Space Invaders, the producers are facing an interesting challenge: The video game doesn’t have a built-in mythology, so on one hand a film won’t risk offending game fans," THR writes. "Conversely, coming up with a captivating universe, especially for video game adaptations, is no easy task."

Isn't every science fiction movie basically based on Space Invaders? From Last Starfighter to War of the Worlds to Battlefield Earth? But guys, if you want a visionary, award-winning writer to pen you something, drop me an e-mail.

At least di Bonaventura is a fan of the '80s; he was a producer on the Transformers and G.I. Joe movies and reportedly is working on a movie version of Asteroids (ummm, Armageddon anyone?) and a remake of 1989's Pet Sematary.
