He's blinding us with ... live horns?
Our good friend Thomas Dolby seems to have both feet back in the music business. Dolby announced this week that he'll do another short U.S tour in September (and U.K. tour in October) and will team up with the act Jazz Mafia Horns. A new live CD also has been released.
Dolby recently finished a national tour after more than a decade out of the music biz. He recorded and released a live concert CD and DVD -- "The Sole Inhabitant." The new CD -- "Thomas Dolby and the Jazz Mafia Horns Live at SxSW" -- features four new original tunes and a cover of George Clinton's "Hot Sauce." (The CD isn't available in stores -- check his website for ordering info.)
The U.S. tour begins Sept. 11 in Londonderry, New Hampshire.
When I interviewed Dolby late last year during his previous tour, he said performing live would help him find the current state of his catalog, which includes hits such as "She Blinded Me With Science," "Europa and the Pirate Twins" and "One of Our Submarines." (Still, I thought the best songs during his live show were the lesser-appreciated tunes like "I Live in a Suitcase" and "The Flat Earth.")
"I wanted to get in front of an audience again and see where I'm at in 2006 and see who in my audience had lasted the 15 years or so that I'd been away," he told me in December. "But I also wanted to update the music in 21st century terms with new sounds and new styles."
