'Hot Tub Time Machine' soundtrack has more standards than surprises

Hot tub time machine A great soundtrack is the byproduct of a great '80s flick. Heretofore, a movie that honors the '80s better have a stellar list of tunes as well. We now know the picks on John Cusack's new back-to-the-'80s movie Hot Tub Time Machine.

The verdict: It's more like a primer for younger fans to get interested in '80s music. Longtime fans of the decade won't hear anything new. (That was always the fun part of a John Hughes soundtrack -- discovering a new band.) I also suspect a few of these songs will be used for comedic purposes (Home Sweet Home, Safety Dance, Push It). The soundtrack is due out March 23.

Here's the list, according the never-disappointing Slicing Up Eyeballs music website:

  • Public Enemy, “Louder Than A Bomb (Back Into Time)”
  • Scritti Politti, “Perfect Way”
  • Men Without Hats, “The Safety Dance”
  • INXS, “What You Need”
  • David Bowie, “Modern Love”
  • The Replacements, “I Will Dare”
  • Salt ’N Pepa, “Push It”
  • Echo & The Bunnymen, “Bring On The Dancing Horses”
  • The English Beat, “Save It For Later”
  • Spandau Ballet, “True”
  • Craig Robinson, “Jessie’s Girl”
  • New Order, “Bizarre Love Triangle”
  • Talking Heads, “Once In A Lifetime”
  • Mötley Crüe, “Home Sweet Home”
  • Craig Robinson, “Let’s Get It Started”
