Lando Calrissian turns 75 today
Billy Dee Williams turns 75 years old today. And yes, if you do the stardate calculations, that means he was born in ... 1937? Lando, you look good for 75. Must be all the carbonite freezing work you've had done.
Truth is that Williams is much more than a Star Wars hero living in a city in clouds. He taught us other important stuff in the '80s. For example? Well, that Colt 45 works every time. And, that we have enough problems in this city without worrying about ghosts or goblins.
Still, for our generation, Williams will always be Lando. In various interviews over the years, Williams willingly shares his memories of making The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, but rarely gives up much information die-hard fans didn't already know.
- He didn't audition for the part, saying he'd given up on the audition process long before the dawn of the '80s.
- He still has some souvenirs from the movie's production, including an Ewok.
- Like most fans our age, he prefers the original trilogy to the three prequels, which he felt relied more on technology than on humanity.
- He says he never does Star Wars conventions.
In 2010, Williams was an invited guest to St. Petersburg's Sunscreen Film Festival, and was escorted into a movie screening with a full squadron of Star Wars characters. Did it make him uncomfortable? It didn't show. Such is the coolness of Lando Calrissian. And Billy Dee Williams.
