David Bowie had his 66th birthday Tuesday, but it was his fans who got the present. Bowie has just released the first single -- Where Are We Now -- off his upcoming album, The Next Day. His first new album in 10 years, it will be released in March. [Buy it now on iTunes.]

According to an Iso/Columbia press release, the new song was produced by long-term collaborator Tony Visconti and was written by Bowie himself.

It's long been assumed that Bowie had simply retired from singing and acting, so the new single and album are quite the birthday shocker.
