Love Plus One: The genesis of the original preppy haircut?
While Lisa Birnbach’s An Official Preppy Handbook came out in 1980 and poked fun of the fashion sense of American East Coast college students, I myself never really visualized what a Preppy would look like until I saw the UK’s Haircut 100 video of Love Plus One on HBO’s Video Jukebox in October of 1982.
Adorned in fabulous sweaters and coifed hair, the Love Plus One video provided endless entertainment for my older sister and I that we viewed over and over. It’s just a great combination of a happy song filmed with a lead singer swinging around in a loin clothe, xylophones and savage cannibals cooking their dinner.
The single reached No. 37 on the U.S. charts and Haircut 100 would only record two albums before Nick Heyward left to pursue his solo career. However, the band reunited in 2011 to record a live album.
