Most overplayed holiday tune: 'Do They Know It's Christmas???'
The 1984 classic holiday tune Do They Know It's Christmas by the super-group Band Aid has surprisingly been named one of the most overplayed holiday songs of all time by Time magazine. Amazing!
The magazine's ranking is based partly on radio play (and obviously partly based on a complete lack of taste. I love this song still.)
"Recorded as part of a campaign against the Ethiopian famine, it contains jaw-droppingly obvious lines like 'And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmastime' and overbearing pretentious lines like 'Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you!'," the magazine explains. "Of course, most famously, the song seems to overlook the fact that more than half of the Ethiopians are Orthodox Christians who celebrate a very robust Christmas tradition in early January. So, yes, apparently, they do know its Christmas."
Play it again. Just to screw with Time.
