Must-see show of 2012: Dennis DeYoung with the Florida Orchestra

12

February

In some ways, I've been practicing for my interview with Dennis DeYoung since 1984. I caught Styx on their Kilroy Was Here tour at the Bayfront Center in downtown St. Petersburg (I cried like a baby when they tore that venue down a few years ago) and it was an epiphany. The perfect combination of drama and music, I thought. I was left wondering more about the vision behind the spectacle.

I wouldn't see DDY again until just a few years ago, when I caught his solo "Music of Styx" tour in Clearwater. It was a jaw-dropper. So I seriously can't wait another day until Dennis returns to Clearwater's Ruth Eckerd Hall, this time for a show alongside the Florida Orchestra.

I talked to Dennis about the show a couple weeks during a marathon, 90-minute-long conversation. Unbelievably, the whole show comes together with just a couple hours of rehearsal. And when it begins, look for the "meat and potatoes" as Dennis described it, of hits from the Styx catalog, including all his hits (Grand Illusion, Come Sail Away) and even some of the Tommy Shaw masterpieces (Renegard, Blue Collar Man).

In addition, Dennis says he'll weave in some classical pieces, as he does here with Don't Let It End. Try not to get weepy when your hear the transition. And for god's sake, buy a ticket to the show at Ruth Eckerd. Or check his official website for a show closer to you.

The interview with Dennis is coming in podcast form on Monday.
