New podcast: March Madness, mullets and more

March

Dwayne SchintziusMarch Madness isn't for everyone. The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament is an acquired taste, like Funyuns dipped in hot beef gravy. Gonna have to trust me on that one. So if everyone isn't thrilled with this week's podcast -- March Madness and College Hoops in the '80s -- co-host Sean Daly and I totally understand. We don't forgive you, but we understand you.

The '80s were big for this sport. The Cardiac Kids. Phi Slamma Jamma. Some kid from North Carolina named Jordan. But truth be told, basketball was no big deal at my alma mater -- the University of Florida -- until the '80s itself. Some 7-foot-tall mulleted behemoth from Brandon, Fla., named Dwayne Schintzius came to play for the Gators. He had talent. He had attitude. A famous story about him in college that gets retold a lot is about a small kid, teasing Dwayne about his height, asks him "How's the weather up there." Schintzius looks down at him, spits and says, "It's raining."

My junior year, not only did the Gators make it to the tourney for the first time ever -- they made it all the way to the Sweet Sixteen, only to lose to Daly's school, Syracuse. Until that year, I'd never even seen a college hoops game in person.

So what am I trying to say? I'm saying give this podcast a chance ... or just fast forward to the seggies like the rest of the world. Click here to download, or click here to get all our shows for free via iTunes.
