New U2 album expected in early 2011

Bono performs at the Rose Bowl, AP photoU2 has a new album on the horizon, which will hopefully take the nasty buzz out of fans' ears after 2009's No Line on the Horizon.

"I would expect a new U2 album sooner than anybody thinks. I would guess early 2011 before the next leg of the American tour which starts in May," the band’s manager Paul McGuinness told the Irish Times.

Some of the songs from the new album, tentatively titled Songs of Ascent, have debuted during the band's current world tour, including Mercy, Every Breaking Wave and Boys Fall from the Sky.

McGuinness (greatest Irish name EVER btw) also took the opportunity with the Times to defend the band's last album, which sold "only" about 5 million copies, or roughly half what How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, its 2004 predecessor, did in sales.

McGuinness called those figures "remarkably well" and blamed illegal downloading for the downturn in album sales. Personally, I blame it on the music itself, which never inspired me to listen to the disc more than once.

TOP 5 U2 ALBUMS BY SALES (Studio only):

1. The Joshua Tree (1987): 28 million

2. Achtung Baby (1991): 17.5 million

3. All That You Can't Leave Behind
(2000): 12 million

4. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb
(2004): 10 million

5. War (1983): 9.5 million
