News to go ga-ga over: Freddie Mercury bio-pic to star Sacha Baron Cohen
Borat as Freddie Mercury? Works for me. Sacha Baron Cohen is set to play the late and legendary frontman for Queen, the band's guitarist Brian May has told the BBC.
"We have Sacha Baron Cohen, which will probably be a shock to a lot of people, but he's been talking with us for a long time," May said. The movie, which will begin shooting next year, will focus on Mercury and Queen during the period leading up to their appearance at Live Aid in 1985. That performance, easily the highlight of the daylong charity concert, sparked a comeback for the band.
The BBC says May and drummer Roger Taylor will oversee music in the film, "which will include songs by the band and by Mercury as a solo performer."
According to the Associated Press, the screenplay will be written by Peter Morgan, whose credits ironically include The Queen. Robert De Niro's Tribeca Productions is among the producers.
For those stuck in the '80s, Baron Cohen's characters over recent years including rapper Ali G, Kazakh journalist Borat and Austrian fashionista Bruno.
