Peter Criss is 65: Happy birthday, Cat Man

20

December

Peter Criss, then and nowPeter Criss and Kiss aren't really creatures of the '80s. Let's face it, the Kiss Invasion came and went in the 1970s. But it was their charisma that pushed me from being merely a music fan through my parents' brand of soft FM silliness into my own generation's contributions to the radio dial.

Even though Kiss pretty much imploded after their Dynasty album in 1979, it was their momentum that pushed me into Styx, then Journey, then New Wave, punk, post-punk and then, ultimately, hibernation until the '80s were reborn in the late '90s. (Thank you, Adam Sandler.)

And like the '80s, Kiss has survived too. And even though they don't tour with Criss on the drums anymore (or Ace Frehley on guitar), it's still the same, reliable act. And sometimes "reliable" is good enough.

Today, the Cat Man turns 65 years old. He's looking pretty good, although that non-makeup photo looks like a genetic cross between the Ramones and Dustin Hoffman. To celebrate Criss' milestone, I'll probably play a little Double Platinum, maybe watch Role Models on DVD. And of course, play the song Beth a couple dozen times.
