Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer' still owns MTV's record

MTV Video Music AwardsCongratulations to Lady Gaga (the "Immaterial Girl") for her eight Moonman trophies at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles. So sorry that your meat bikini wasn't enough to topple the king of the VMAs, Peter Gabriel, who won 10 trophies in 1987 for his landmark video for Sledgehammer.

Or maybe it was just nine awards. Sources vary, but here's what he's credited with winning that year:

  • Video of the Year
  • Best Male Video
  • Best Concept Video
  • Best Overall Performance
  • Best Direction
  • Best Special Effects
  • Best Art Direction
  • Best Editing
  • Most Experimental Video
  • Video Vanguard Award

In the process of his near-sweep, Gabriel beat out acts like U2, Genesis, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Talking Heads, Run DMC, and yes, Madonna. Just goes to show that it takes more than flashing your naughty bits and walking on stilts to reserve a spot in pop culture history.
