Streets of Fire was a flop of a movie in 1984, making only about $8 million in sales on a budget nearly twice that, and there is something criminally wrong about that. For one, it shares so much in common with one of the movie's best-attended flicks: Purple Rain. Consider this.

• Both Streets of Fire and Purple Rain are better remembered for their songs than the plot. (Don't the Sorels remind of you of The Time too?)
• The finale of both movies features unlikely resolutions in the storyline, coupled with phenomenal music numbers. (Which is better: Prince's anthemic Purple Rain or the life-affirming Tonight is What it Means to be Young?)
• Both are rock and roll fables. But only one actually touts that label. And it's Streets of Fire.

As you'll hear in this week's podcast, I'm a little obsessed with the themes behind Streets of Fire. And I get a little misty-eyed every time I hear Tonight is What it Means to be Young. Because in a way, every episode of Stuck in the '80s is like that to me: a chance to be young again. Because before you know it, it's gone.
